Fishing Line Recycling Project Update

SUCCESSFUL WATERCRAFT EXPEDITION

One of our members, Carl Otten, led an expedition on Saturday afternoon (August 18th) during the mid- incoming tide to pick up garbage and ldiscarded fishing line in the Ash Creek Marsh area. They paddled along the shore and collected as much garbage and old fishing line as possible.  You can see from the photo above of Carl’s paddleboard, that there was quite a haul, which included fishing line, hooks, lures, and plastics.

EXCITING NEWS – TROUT UNLIMITED CONTACTED US!

The Vice President of Nutmeg Trout Unlimited, a local chapter of Trout Unlimited, a conservation and fishing organization, contacted us about starting a fishing line recycling project for Connecticut’s rivers.  To read more about this project click here…

We were cited in their write up and our young osprey’s death was cited as well.  It is great that we have had an impact beyond our immediate area thanks to the extensive media coverage of our failed osprey rescue.

FISHING LINE RECYCLING BINS PROJECT

The bins have been delivered to all locations except for Bridgeport.  We are in daily communications with Bridgeport to coordinate the installation of the bins within the next week or two.  Thank to Madeline Raleigh of Bridgeport in the Know for coordinating with the city and to Pete Spain for making this happen.

The East End Yacht Club has just asked to become part of the project, so we will deliver a bin and sign to them.

Four bins are currently being installed in Fairfield…

And two have been installed at Captains Cove…

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO COLLECT FISHING LINE

If you would like to volunteer to empty the bins at St. Mary’s, Arthur Street, Seaside Park, or Pleasure Beach.  Please let us know.  We are coordinating volunteers for CT Audubon.

Email Gail at ashcreekassoc@optonline.net

Thank you!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED  TO HAND OUT LEAFLETS TO LET FISHERMEN KNOW BINS ARE COMING

Laurie Annunziato has been having success handing out the fishing line recycling brochures to fishermen.  One of them had heard about the project already.

Please send me a quick email (ashcreekassoc@optonline.net) if you are willing to volunteer to hand out the attached leaflets to fishermen.

Let them know that fishing line bins will be installed at St. Mary’s and other fishing places in Bridgeport and Fairfield.  The Town of Fairfield is installing four bins in fishing areas such as the South Benson Marina and the jetty.  Our Councilperson Pete Spain is working with the City of Bridgeport on the Bridgeport locations.

Until the bins are installed, please encourage the fishermen to take their fishing line home, cut it up, and put it in their trash (not recycling).  Thank you.
